Asking your child to help out with the chores is about more than just getting the house clean. Assigning chores teaches your child to prioritize, be responsible and work as part of a team. Chores are also a great way to build self-esteem by taking pride in a job well-done.

When considering chores for your child, it is important to think about age-appropriateness. Chores for kids should take some effort, but not be overly frustrating for your child to complete. As your child grows, so will her responsibilities. Here are some ideas for age appropriate chores:

Ages 2-3

  • Pick up toys.
  • Get dressed and put on socks and shoes.
  • Put dirty clothes in the hamper.
  • Help dust.
  • Help move clothes from washer to dryer.
  • Ages 4-5
  • Empty wastebaskets.
  • Set the table.
  • Water plants.
  • Help sort laundry.
  • Help feed pets.
  • Ages 6-7
  • Sweep floors.
  • Fold laundry.
  • Vacuum.
  • Assist with meal preparation.
  • Ages 9-11
  • Wipe down counters.
  • Clean mirrors.
