Roswell, GA Daycare: Transportation Safety

Posted on 05-16-2016 | Suzanne Edwards

As the weather heats up again this summer, there will undoubtedly be tragic stories of children left behind in hot cars and buses. These stories are all the more crushing due to the preventable nature of such accidents. At Kids 'R' Kids East Roswell Preschool, we take transportation safety seriously all year long; with summer camp and so many field trips on the horizon, we wanted to remind our families of our bus safety policies.

All of our buses, both our large school-sized bus and our two mini-buses, are inspected daily by our bus drivers prior to transporting children. They also undergo a professional inspection annually. There are seat belts on all of our buses for teachers and children. Every staff member involved in transportation, from drivers to directors to teachers, is required to complete a 2-hour biannual transportation safety course. All of our staff members are also trained in first aid, CPR, AED, and fire safety. Children between the ages of 4 and 5 must be transported on our big bus, which is rated for safe transport of children of this age, or, if they ride on one of the mini-buses, must ride in a secured age-appropriate booster seat.

Children are checked in as they board our bus by a teacher who makes sure to check off the child's face with the name called. Children are then checked off in the same manner when they arrive to their destination. Once all children have been checked off the bus, the bus will be checked a minimum of two times to make sure there are no children left behind - once by the bus driver or supervising teacher and once by a second administrator or teacher.

Teachers and bus drivers carry a cell phone on board the bus which is only used for emergency communication. Each bus is equipped with a fully stocked First Aid Kit. Bus routes are planned ahead of time and details left at the school so that the whereabouts of each bus are always known.

We know that our families trust us with their children's safety and wellbeing, and we take that responsibility very seriously both in our facility and on our buses.
